Sciemus adds Value through Understanding risk

Sciemus was founded in 2002 with the aim to create a series of world class risk analysis models across a variety of industry sectors for better quantification of risk for insurance and finance. We take an engineering based approach to building models for sectors that are characterised by complexity and continual technological change - both key drives of many industries.

Our take on risk

Risk is all around us, it influences everything we do and every decision we make. But risk is not a overwhelming force that dictates the way we live our lives and run our businesses. Risk is a collective threat present because of numerous critical components and probabilities, these factors combined to form our perceived outlook on risk as an unavoidable force.

However if you start to deconstruct risk down to its individual factors, and then understand how these factors influence each other, you begin to unravel what was once a unforeseeable force into a set of manageable, predictable and avoidable threats.

At Sciemus we see technical risks as a series of factors that have yet to be unravelled. Every risk can be broken down into its critical components to be understood and controlled, whether its a small communications satellite or a 10,000 megawatt power plant.

Our models

Our models are developed in partnership with QinetiQ - the former research laboratories of the Ministry of Defence. It is this partnership that has allowed us to create truly unique models driven by proprietary intelligence and world class mathematical capability. We develop models for sectors where historically, there has been an over reliance on experiential judgement, flawed assumption and incomplete analysis. Similarly, many of the areas we operate in cannot be assessed using actuarial analysis since quite simply, what has happened in the past is no guide to what might happen in the future.

Following a two year development cycle, each model undergoes extensive testing before being applied in a commercial context. Our first model was created to understand satellite risk, this has been independently evaluated and its application saw the creation of the largest satellite insurer in the world.
